What's still relevant

How providers and a former Ofsted Deputy Director prepare learners, employers and staff for an inspection.
Why telling inspectors what works for an individual learner, and having staff who can find evidence quickly, still helps an inspection run smoothly.
How a needs assessment that records strengths as well as barriers shapes tailored support, with functional skills examples.
Why accurate starting points and data broken down by learner group matter.

What's out of date

Outstanding as a grade (from 50:57). The panel discusses holding an outstanding grade and what it means. Now: The renewed framework, in use since November 2025, has no overall grade: each evaluation area is graded separately on a five-point scale, from urgent improvement to exceptional, in a report card.
Planning call and learner list (from 9:16). Inspectors ask on the planning call for a list of every learner and then choose whom they speak to. Now: The planning call now covers the provider's context, leaders' priorities and approach to inclusion, and inspectors agree a case sample.
Inclusion and SEND in inspection (from 38:03). Reasonable adjustments for SEND learners are described as the end result of earlier support that inspectors may check. Now: Inclusion is graded in its own right, and inspectors look for early and accurate assessment of needs, a graduated approach and evidence of impact on learners.
Local skills needs (from 17:01). A panellist says Ofsted is bringing in a new judgement on how well colleges meet local skills needs. Now: Contribution to meeting skills needs is now its own evaluation area, graded for FE colleges, sixth form colleges and designated institutions only.
Apprenticeship achievement rate (from 52:51). A panellist cites 57% of apprentices achieving. Now: The overall apprenticeship achievement rate was 65.4% in 2024/25, up from 53.4% in 2021/22 on the current method.
