“As part of the initial assessment (which is an eligible cost), the provider must undertake a screening exercise for learning support.”
– (DfE, 2023)
Since 2023 the rules for claiming learning support funding for apprenticeships changed in a meaningful way to improve learning outcomes for apprentices and ensure providers are empowering learners to succeed. To access learning support funding, the Department for Education (DfE) mandates that apprenticeship providers conduct an initial assessment before the apprenticeship begins. This assessment must include a screening exercise for learning support needs.
This landmark shift will improve the learning experience for millions of apprentices over the coming decades as their needs are identified and supported.

Providers using Cognassist today
At Cognassist we have been helping providers identify cognitive challenges in learners since 2017. Our cognitive assessment can be completed in less than 30 minutes, comprehensively assesses cognition across 9 core cognitive domains, and produces an easy-to-understand learner report helping learner and tutor understand how the learner processes information and guidance on what to do with that information.
Our assessment can be used as the mandatory screening exercise that is now required to claim LSF.
When you implement Cognassist in your program you are doing much more than ticking the box for implementing a screening exercise.
You’re using a best-in-class tool to unlock valuable insight for all learners. Assessing nine cognitive domains, our assessment provides unique insight into not just challenges but strengths of your learners.
For your learners with identified needs, the platform becomes a tool to support the tutor as they implement bespoke support plans for the learner and provides evidence of the steps taken to ensure absolute compliance and no problems with claiming funding.
All learners continue to get value…
Learners who complete the assessment and their report shows no learning challenges were identified will still continue to benefit from the platform through exploring a catalogue of AI-enhanced learning strategies that can supercharge a learner’s experience and retention.
These insights enabled personalised learning strategies, improving learner outcomes and tutor efficiency.
