Extra time at assessment

Maximise Potential: Extra Time Explained

Many apprentices and learners are eligible for extra time when conducting assessments with time limits but rarely receive it. The challenge for providers is identifying the learners who need that extra time in order for the assessment to be equitable before exam failure and building the evidence to present to the EPAO.

The solution?
Screen every learner at the start of their program. the Cognassist digital cognitive assessment report can be used as evidence for timed-based reasonable adjustments and is one of the only digital assessments to be recognised by independent UK Exam Authority JCQ and directly supported by some of the UK’s major Awarding Organisations. Help more learners pass on time, the first time.

Speed of Working

How does the Cognassist Cognitive Diversity Assessment measure speed of working?

Included in the Cognassist Cognitive Diversity Assessment are two tests that specifically measure speed of processing; Visual Information Processing Speed (VIPS) and Reading Decoding (RD).

Reading Decoding relates to how quickly written information is processed. For example, when we’re reading. Visual Information Processing Speed measures how quickly visual information is processed. For example, graphs, charts, and visualisations.

These tests lead to the Speed of Working Report for the learner which evidences how quickly learners process certain types of information.

Equity

Extra time in exams is often provided as an accommodation for individuals with certain disabilities or conditions that affect their ability to complete exams within the standard time frame. It aims to level the playing field and ensure that these individuals have an equal opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills.

Reducing Discrimination

Around 15% of the population have weaker speed of working than other cognitive processing abilities. This doesn’t usually impact intelligence, but it can limit the performance of other cognitive processing in artificial environments; such as timed exams. The best way educational phycologists have found to counter this effect is to enable flexibilities for additional time to be awarded.

Complex Tasks

In exams that involve complex problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity, extra time for those who need it enables individuals to thoroughly explore and demonstrate their understanding of the material. Without this flexibility their processing speed can dampen their cognitive retrieval and processing of learned knowledge putting them at a disadvantage to their peers during a critical time.

Secure extra time

Using Cognassist to unlock extra time

Navigating the process of requesting extra time for your learners is made easier with Cognassist. The Speed of Working report can be used to identify your learners who could benefit from extra time.

This evidence can be presented to Awarding Organisations, of which many have pre-approved Cognassist already, to support your claim.
